Because it would be premature to announce a blog without testing it.

Welcome to this blog. This is not the first post. This is the post before the first post. What it is all about?

  1. I decided to build my own blog - as in, writing the software and the templates for it. I did it (a) to demonstrate my programming abilities to employers, and (b) because I'm a masochist.
  2. I did not build this blog from scratch. I built in using Django, and then made use of a lot of prior art created by the Django community. It's a little late as I'm typing this, but I would like to get around to acknowledging certain personnel. Later.
  3. Like all software projects, this blog needs testing. I prefer to do as much testing as possible by myself. I don't like to demonstrate errors in public
  4. Unfortunately, there comes a time when one admits to oneself that you're not going to detect all bugs. It's time to roll out the thing to the public, and damn the consequences.

So there are going to be bugs. Let's see how many we can find. So what do I need from you? Stress testing. What I want from you is to add a comment. Make it one line, two, or five or six. Don't worry about the length. Add your email - it will remain secret. (Or make up one.) Add your url. Think of this post as the equivalent of kicking the tires with steel-capped Doc Martens, or going "tssk-tssk-one-two-thre-tssk-tssk" into a mike. If there are going to be bugs, let us catch as may as possible in a short time.

For example, there is one problem which needs to be addressed: the commenting forms do not work in Internet Explorer 6 and 7. I will be working on that in the next couple of days. I'm no fan of those browsers, but it is still unprofessional to have 43% of the population unable to comment.

Have fun, but not too much fun. No sexist, no racism, no homophobia, and no defamatory material thank you. Cheers.

P.S.: spam will be deleted

Update: the commenting form may work in IE7, as shown by a test done by my wife at TAFE.

Hello!

I am going to see what writing 'do not have one" in the url box does to your blog.

... it asks me to enter a valid url.

Chakae: that's an interesting point you raise. It's a usability issue as regards visitors to my site. URLs should be indicated as optional (but valid if present.)

On the other hand, email addresses are compulsory, so they need to be provided.
